The reading of the technical file is essential to ensure that the work can be performed on the six organs of the Basilica of Mafra and that it explores the specific resources of this instrumental ensemble. Works containing passages that are impossible to be played in The Basilica of Mafra will be eliminated.

The drones are groups of two or three pipes with approximate (but not equal) tuning and produce a deep, undulating sound, similar to the rumbling of a drum. The pitch is not defined in any of the six organs (the indications in the technical file are merely approximate).

Some stops of Portuguese historic organs have particular names and sonorities. In the technical file, the specification of each instrument in the Basilica of Mafra contains a translation into English of the name of each stop. Often the translation is not literal, but tries to indicate an equivalent stop whose sonority (and intensity) is relatively similar. This information is adequate to infer the range of possible dynamics. A sufficiently thorough knowledge of organ writing is, however, indispensable

Registration "terraces” changes, achieved through the plenum or reeds cancel pedals, can be done quite easily while playing. However, the stop mechanics are rather heavy. Therefore, enough time should be provided for individual stop changes to be made smoothly. In the technical file, the specifications reflect exactly the arrangement of the stop knobs on the console. Please note that the organist, without the help of assistants, must make all stop changes!

The six organs have small monitors connected to a camera installed in the Gospel organ (Evangelho). The organist performing in this organ may act, simultaneously, as conductor.
